colo|nel
colo|nel «KUR nuhl», noun.
an officer ranking next below a brigadier general and next above a lieutenant colonel. A colonel is a commissioned officer. In the United States, the Army, the Air Force, and the Marines all have colonels. »

... the regiment to be commanded by a Colonel and each of the Battalions by a Lieutenant Colonel or Major (Duke of Wellington).

Abbr: Col.
[earlier coronel < Middle French, early variant of colonel < Italian colonnello commander of a regiment < colonna military column < Latin columna pillar]
Usage Colonel is a good example of a spelling that has survived a change of pronunciation. The word, from the French, had two parallel forms, colonel, coronel, each pronounced in three syllables. For 175 years the word has been pronounced «KUR nuhl», from the coronel form, but only the spelling colonel has survived.
